Název práce: Plasmachemical processing of carbon nanomaterials for sensoric applications

In the frame of the proposed PhD thesis, carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, nanowalls and graphene will be prepared onto electrodes of quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM), electrical or electrochemical sensors. Besides pure carbon materials, the thesis aims to investigate also their modifications using surface functionalization by chemical groups or using metal nanoparticles. The goal is to prepare chemical or biochemical sensors and identify important aspects of the materials and technologies used. Technologies for the preparation of the active sensor electrode will include plasma processing of materials but they are not limited to it. The novelty of the approach is the utilization of atmospheric pressure discharges like microwave plasma torch for the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials and metal-based nanoparticles and their in-situ functionalization using either the same type of the discharge or the second type of the atmospheric pressure discharge for an in-flight surface modification. Besides, low pressure discharges will be studied for the purpose of plasma reduction of graphene oxide (GO), cleaning of copper foils used for the growth of graphene and functionalization of carbon nanomaterials by biochemically active functional groups. The proposed topic is highly interdisciplinary because it involves collaboration of the PhD applicant with plasma physicists, chemists, biochemists, material scientists and engineers developing novel materials and the sensoric structures. It is based on the previously gained expertise and large infrastrucure built within the last few years by the Masaryk University. The topic will also contribute to a mutual collaboration with the second largest university in Brno, Brno University of Technology, which groups are also working on the development of sensors.
