To solve environmental problems with conventional plastics utilized for single-use applications, alternatives are being studied, such as the substitution of conventional plastics for biodegradable ones. Typically wet surface treatments are used to modify surface properties of conventional polymers. The wet treatments, however, are problematic for the biodegradable polymers since a degradation induced by the hydrolysis.
The proposed dissertation work is aimed on the application of DCSBD plasma sources for surface activation of PLA and PVA biodegradable textiles and foils. Dry methods for post-plasma grafting will be studied also. The effects of the treatments will be studied by advanced surface analysis methods as AFM, XPS, MALDI, FTIR, etc. It is expected that thedisertation will be a part of a collaborative project with an industrial partner.
