Concise description: Optical spectroscopy (transmission, reflection, ellipsometry, Raman scattering) provides valuable information on electronic and vibronic structure of crystals and alloys. Very interesting phenomena occur in the stratified structures composed of different materials. In particular, nitrides are materials of considerable interest in both basic research and applications. Recent advances in physics and technology of GaN and related materials led to extremely efficient generation of visible light. Another emerging application of the III-nitride layered structures is in power electronics. The thesis will aim at optical spectroscopy of selected systems, based on epitaxial nitride compounds. One of the systems to be studied is the AlGaN/GaN/AlGaN/Si stratified structures. The work will comprise the studies of electronic states and lattice vibrations in the constituent materials. The subject is suitable for a student capable to reach a good knowledge of solid-state physics, semiconductor physics, and optics.
