Many products of daily use contain additives to improve their quality. Plastics contain plasticizers to improve their flexibility. In clothes, furniture and many building materials flame retardants are applied to increase fire safety. The best known example of an anti-fouling agent is tributyltin, that was in the past widely used on ships. Tributyltin is now phased out but has been replaced by other agents. Except for ships, also the paints and plastering in and on houses may contain anti-fouling agents and pesticides to prevent algae growing. All these additives may leach to the environment and can pose unintended risk to the environment including human. Measuring methods are needed for assessing the extent of the release of additives. Furthermore, it is important to study factors that may influence the release.
Among available measuring methods passive sampling present a promising approach. They can be exposed close or in contact with the material to investigate. Passive samplersl absorb the target substances and their uptake rates and sorbed amounts provide information on released concentrations. In addition, diffusion rates in materials will be investigated to predict long term release of additives from materials.
Clear knowledge on these issues will contribute to a science based assessment of the risk these substances pose to environmental quality and human exposure.
