Bachelor and Master Studies

Basic undergarduate study information

The faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno offers higher education in the fields of mathematical, physical, chemical, biological, and earth sciences. The education system is based on a three-tier study concept (bachelor's – master's – doctoral study).

The first level of university education, undergraduate study, is implemented through bachelor degree programmes. The standard period of a bachelor degree program is three years. Students that successfully complete the undergraduate programme are awarded a diploma and an academic degree “Bachelor” (Bc.)

 

Standard Bachelor Programmes

BStandard bachelor programmes are primarily intended for students who will continue their studies in follow-up master programmes. They offer general education in the given scientific field, which is necessary for further study. The faculty offers 34 fields of study in 9 accredited programmes of this type.

Vocational Bachelor programmes

Vocational Bachelor programmes respond to current demands of practice and are for preparing graduates for practice, but with the possibility of continuing in their studies in related master's programmes. The faculty offers 10 fields of study in 7 accredited programmes of this type.

The study is carried out as a

  • single- field study, focused mainly on educating future scientific experts and researchers in the given field, or
  • multidisciplinary study, allowing a combination of two or even more fields. The traditional examples of multidisciplinary studies are studies with focus on education. It is intended for students who will continue their studies in follow-up master programmes. It provides their graduates with teaching qualifications for teaching general education science subjects at secondary schools.

One may choose from the following study forms:

  • On-campus study formis intended primarily for students who are not bound by a contract of employment.
  • Off-campus study form is intended mainly for employed students, but it is possible even for students without employment. It includes a combination of full-time and part-time arrangements for fulfilling study requirements

Conditions for admission to undergraduate degree programmes

The necessary conditions for admission to the Bachelor's degree program are:
  • having achieved full secondary or full secondary vocational education (graduation),
  • successful completion of the entrance examination in the admissions process. The admission of applicants, who have met the necessary conditions, will be based solely on final applicant rank (for a given field of study) created upon entrance examination scores.The number of students accepted is limited by the capacity of individual programmes and departments which is published annually.
