Project summary

In the last decade capillary electrokinetic separation techniques have become so powerful as to provide highly efficient separations and large peak capacities. Today the availability of sophisticated automated equipment for CZE makes the technique suitable for implementation in routine laboratories for the separation of a variety of molecules including metal ions, organic and inorganic ions, drugs, peptides, proteins and DNA fragments, even whole bacterial cells and viruses. Compared to chromatographic and other analyses, the capillary electrophoretic methods are rapid, can be automated, and require only small amounts of samples. Moreover, the analyses can be performed with high sensitivity and reproducibility. All of these parameters also imply the likelihood of CZE being one of the methods of choice for the determination of biologically active compounds from different sources.

  • Application of CZE for analyses of biologically active compounds in medicinal plants.(Ref.1,2)
  • Application of CZE in clinical chemistry – determination of important thiols (homocysteine, cysteine) by „in-capillary“ derivatization (Ref.4,5)
  • Study of enzymes by EMMA (Electrophoretically Mediated MicroAnalysis) (Ref. 3,6)
  • Capillary electrochromatography in analytical biochemistry
