Department of Botany and Zoology

Research and Educational Activities

Research focus of the Department is on ecology, evolution and biodiversity of cyanobacteria, algae, vascular plants and animals. Main topics of current research include systematic of vascular plants, invertebrates and mammals, evolution of organism’s genome size, ecology of terrestrial plant communities, mires, fens, wetlands and running waters, ecology and evolution of fish parasites, behavioural and population ecology of spiders and bats, palaeoecology and macroecology.

The Department provides education at the bachelor’s and master’s level in systematic Biology and Ecology, with specializations in either Botany or Zoology. There are five doctoral study programmes: Botany, Ecology, Hydrobiology, Parasitology and Zoology.
