Main Objectives of the Project
The principal objectives of the project can be summarised in the following
items:
- coordination of theoretical, experimental as well as applied
research activities focused on certain aspects of weathering with
serious impact on the environment quality and human activities. Specific
fields of interest will include
- prediction of durability of lithic building materials; assessment of
stone conservation techniques
- the weathering of rocks, mine tailings and other minerals-containing
wastes as the source of environment pollution. The research coordination
will prevent research doubling, and help to unify experimental and analytical
methods in the study of atmosphere - water - rock interactions
- enhancement of communication with special emphasis on
the exchange of research results and their consultation through promoting
personal exchange of experience at meetings on national and international
level, expeditious sharing of research reports and papers through e-mail
distribution, in project newsletter, and databases
and library formed during the project’s course;
- elaboration of recommendations for international organisations,
goverments and other institutions authorised to decision making in environmental
affairs related to rock weathering. They will include: ranking of hazardous
factors, priorities in remediation and protection measures, assessment
of technological impacts connected with man-induced or initiated weathering
processes.
Duration of the project: 5 years (1996 - 2000)
