Pedagogical and Research Activities

The most important issues in the activities of the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry in 1995 were update of the educational plan and the development of scientific research. Two of our prominent professors, Prof. Bohuslav Fojt and Prof. Josef Staněk, became professor emeritus. We are glad they continue to teach and do scientific research

The most important issues in the modernisation of education in 1995 was the establishment of a new graduate course, “Geology in the Environment Protection”. For this course, educational schemes and new curricula have been introduced in co-operation with the Dept. of Geology and Paleontology. Based on the comments of the students, we have also completely altered the structure of education of petrography and petrology.

The members of the department have continued the research in the current grant projects and have elaborated 5 new ones.

The chemical laboratory has been equipped with isotachophoretic analyser and tribo-polarograph, intended to be used in the research of weathering, building materials and trace element geochemistry.

The research activities of the department members were focused in the first place on the processes involving weathering of rocks, minerals and ores. This topic included the theoretical and laboratory research of Prof. Zeman and his graduates and postgraduates, covering electrochemical study of biooxidation of sulphides, weathering of natural carbonates as well as the mass balance of heavy metals in Nové Mlýny lakes. Other aspects of weathering processes, taking part in natural and artificial stony building materials and their interaction with construction metals were studied by the team of Dr. Gregerová (P. Pospíšil, V. Vávra, P. Sulovský). Theoretical aspects and laboratory investigation of silicate weathering was led by J. Faimon (with co-operation of P. Sulovský). P. Sulovský (with J. Faimon and V. Vávra) has continued extensive research of the mineralogy and chemical speciation of potentially hazardous elements in fly ash, coming from classical and newly from fluidised-bed coal combustion, followed with the investigation of the possibilities of stabilisation of these elements in fly-ash based building materials (in co-operation with the Building Materials Research Institute Brno and Most Coal Mining Company). Lead by a strong conviction there exists an urgent need to co-ordinate theoretical modelling, laboratory research and field investigation of those aspects of weathering processes, connected with anthropogenic impacts, P. Sulovský and J. Zeman have elaborated and submitted a proposal of a new 5-year project for the International Geological Co-ordination Programme (joint enterprise of UNESCO and International Geological Association), called “Anthropogenic Impacts on Weathering Processes”. This idea has met warm world-wide response among the interested researchers, and the IGCP Scientific Board has chosen it for funding.
