Ted Maczka
THE FISH LAKE GARLIC MAN

Ted Maczka, is the County’s legendary Garlic Man. He’s on a mission is to make Canada self-sufficient in garlic. He’s been called “the Johnny Appleseed of Garlic” for giving away garlic seeds and freely sharing his enormous garlic knowledge. Even the New York Times has written about Ted and published his cloves of wisdom.

Ted’s superb ‘elephant garlic’ is a Royal Fair prize winner, and he has inspired a whole new generation of organic County growers. A familiar figure in his garlic topped hat with a string of garlic round his neck, Ted has slowed down a little after recent knee surgery, but still travels widely, spreading his “garlic gospel” in Canada and the United States.

Though few of them follow Ted’s advice to chew raw garlic for health, the gourmet chefs on the Taste Trail agree choosing crisp, local garlic over cheaper imports makes their special dishes even better.
