This vegetation type is composed of short and tall sedges, including species with boreal distribution range, such as Carex chordorrhiza. C. diandra and C. lasiocarpa, brown mosses and calcium-tolerant peat mosses. Other species of water-saturated habitats, such as Menyanthes trifoliata, are also frequently present. This vegetation type frequently occurs on deep, old sediments and may persist if unmanaged for a long time due to high water level. In unmanaged stands, willows may form a sparse shrub layer. This vegetation contains several endangered species and glacial relicts. It has a boreal distribution which extends south to central Europe. In the Czech Republic it occurs rarely in the Krušné hory Mountains, Český ráj area, southern Bohemia and Bohemian-Moravian Uplands.
