The Laboratory of Trypanosomatid Biology investigates the molecular biology, genomics, and evolution of parasitic protists, with a primary focus on trypanosomatids such as Leishmania, Trypanosoma, Leptomonas, Blastocrithidia, and related genera. The team explores a broad range of topics including comparative genomics and transcriptomics, RNA editing, and the use of non-canonical genetic codes. Research also delves into the molecular mechanisms that underlie virulence and host-parasite interactions, as well as the role of bacterial and viral endosymbionts in shaping parasite biology. A key area of interest is the evolutionary transition to parasitism among protists. A significant part of the laboratory’s current research is devoted to extracellular vesicles (EVs) produced by trypanosomatids, examining their involvement in intra- and interspecies communication, modulation of host immune responses, and the transport of viral particles and other bioactive molecules. Special attention is given to the mechanisms by which EVs facilitate horizontal gene transfer and contribute to parasite adaptation and pathogenicity. The laboratory maintains close collaborations with both Czech and international partners and actively participates in research initiatives supported by national and EU funding.
