It seems that support doesn’t start with tools, but with space

When we ask what truly helps people grow, we tend to expect complex answers. But more often than not, they are surprisingly simple: having the space to pause, to name what we need, and to set our own boundaries.

This is exactly what emerged as the most valuable aspect of a recent workshop for women in science at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, held under the auspices of the HR Award and the OPZ+ project. The workshop was conducted in English to reflect the international composition of the participants. Attendees particularly appreciated the parts focused on identifying their own needs and roles, setting boundaries, and creating space for individual reflection. The opportunity to share experiences also resonated strongly — openly, informally, and without the pressure to “have things figured out.” Such an environment is not a given, yet it is essential for a sustainable career and a genuine sense of support.

At the same time, participant feedback highlights that alongside a safe space, there is also a need for concreteness. There is a recurring demand for more practically oriented content: how to navigate returning from maternity or parental leave, how to maintain career continuity, or how to orient oneself in available support mechanisms. There is also a clear call for more opportunities to share experiences and for a higher level of interactivity.

These insights do not form a plan, but they do offer a fairly precise map of what participants perceive as meaningful: a combination of reflection, sharing, and practical tools within the specific context of academia.

Perhaps the most important takeaway, however, is simple: when we give people space to talk about what they truly need, they will tell us. And often more precisely than we would be able to design ourselves.
