Masaryk University’s Bioskop opens new premises

Today, the Bioskop Science Education Centre at Masaryk Universitys Faculty of Science celebrated the opening of its newly modernised premises at the Bohunice University Campus (Pavilion E24). This expansion will significantly enhance the centres capabilities in providing practical education in the natural and medical sciences to children, students and the general public.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed by Martin Bareš (Rector of Masaryk University [MU]), Tomáš Kašparovský (Dean of the Faculty of Science) and Martin Repko (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine). Also in attendance at the opening were Petr Hladík, a member of the MU Board of Trustees, and representatives of the Brno City Council and the South Moravian Region.

“We want Masaryk University to be a place that opens the doors of knowledge to people of all ages. We believe that the path to an educated, self-confident and values-based society begins in childhood. We therefore view the new Bioskop centre premises not only as a modern teaching facility, but also as an environment where curiosity is awakened, where the first scientific questions arise, and where decisions about future studies and life paths are often made. Children and young people are our future, and we want to be their partner on their journey of discovery. I am proud that Masaryk University is a university for life”, said MU Rector Martin Bareš.

Bioskop moved to the Bohunice campus last summer. The new premises have undergone gradual modernisation, allowing for more intensive laboratory work, increased course capacity and an expanded range of educational programmes.

“I am glad that such an important workplace for popularising the natural sciences has found a suitable location within the university campus, allowing it to develop and offer a dignified environment for our applicants”, said Tomáš Kašparovský, Dean of the Faculty of Science at MU.

The grand opening included demonstrations of interactive courses, including the ongoing programme for secondary schools, 'Blood – the Essence of Life'. Visitors had the opportunity to observe students working in the laboratory and find out about the other courses offered by Bioskop.

“Our goal is to make science more accessible so that people can experience it for themselves. These new premises allow us to work with modern equipment and provide programmes that meet the current demand for high-quality science education”, summarised Petra Matulová, head of the Bioskop Teaching Centre.

Masaryk University’s Bioskop has long focused on popularising the natural sciences through practical, hands-on teaching methods. Its programmes are designed for children aged six and over, as well as for primary and secondary school students, teachers and the general public. The centre’s motto, 'hear and forget; see and remember; try and understand’, encapsulates its mission to encourage participants to grasp science through their own experiences. Bioskop also systematically helps young people to discover and develop their talents, and to make better choices about their further studies and future careers. The centre has played a key role in the success of many students in national and international competitions, with over 32,000 participants having completed its programme to date.
