Construction work took place from May 2025 to April 2026. The pavilion was officially opened on Thursday, May 14, 2026, with the participation of several members of the extended Dean’s Council of the Faculty of Science, Brno’s Deputy Mayor Filip Chvátal, and other guests.
“Building new laboratory facilities was one of my top priorities immediately after taking office. I am glad that we were able to realize this project in a relatively short time,” says Petr Táborský, Director of the Department of Chemistry.
The new facilities include three modern laboratories and corresponding office space. Their creation responds to the department’s growing research needs while also opening the door to new research teams.
One of these will be the research group led by Tomáš Fiala, who recently received a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. In his project, he focuses on elucidating the origins of Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
The creation of these new facilities is an important step in terms of the institute’s long-term strategy. Involving students in research is one of its key objectives, as are the development of international collaboration and participation in prestigious grant projects. The operation of the laboratories will be largely funded by European and national research sources.
According to the institute’s leadership, the new facilities also enhance Brno’s appeal as a center of cutting-edge science. “High-quality infrastructure is one of the key factors that enable us to attract talented scientists from abroad to Brno,” adds Táborský.
