Our Faculty at the Science and Technology Festival

From 4 to 6 September, the Faculty of Science participated in the Science and Technology Festival at the Brno Exhibition Centre. The festival featured over a hundred interactive stands, experiments and workshops for children, students and adults. The Faculty of Science offered a programme across four indoor stands and one outdoor stand.

Visitors were treated to a wide range of topics, from the microcosm to the universe. Bioskop, the science education centre, visitors could look at plant and animal cells under a microscope and learn how their individual structures work.

Researchers from the RECETOX centre ran interactive activities focusing on attention, memory and concentration, including the Stroop test and memory exercises. At the Department of Botany and Zoology’s stand, visitors were able to test their knowledge of edible and inedible mushrooms. The Czech Antarctic Research Programme offered insights into the unique natural environment of the distant white continent, while the Department of Experimental Biology introduced visitors to model organisms and to recent research into development, immunity and the way living organisms respond to stress.

Other stands also presented science as an adventure and a game. The Departments of Physics organised experiments on superconductivity, magnetic levitation and microchips. Outside, visitors had the opportunity to observe the sun through a solar telescope, and both children and adults launched a total of 1,280 water rockets to demonstrate the law of conservation of momentum.

The Department of Geological Sciences presented the mineral resources mined in the Czech Republic through an interactive ‘Resources Case’. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics demonstrated that mathematics encompasses much more than just arithmetic, encouraging visitors to solve brain teasers and puzzles such as Archimedes' stomachion. The mathematicians also put on a brilliant Science Theatre performance, vividly demonstrating to visitors how numbers can lie.

The Faculty of Science offered visitors to the festival the opportunity to engage with science in a practical, illustrative and immediate way, covering a range of disciplines. We would like to thank the 65 lecturers and students from the Faculty of Science who organised these activities.
