Newsletter for PhD students and Postdocs

Dear PhD students and Postdocs,

The enrolment of courses as well as the start of the new semester is successfully over. What new things did we encounter at the beginning of the semester, and what is ahead of us? Read the March newsletter for Early-Stage Researchers to learn more!

MMD 2.0 - Second Semester in MUNI Mendel Doctorandus Programme

MUNI Mendel Doctorandus welcomes the new semester with new students and a brand-new logo

The MUNI Mendel Doctorandus programme for talented PhD students opened another admission procedure in January 2023. A total of 14 students across the faculties of the Bohunice Campus and CEITEC applied, and members of the MMD Committee reviewed their applications. After the evaluation, all applicans were admitted to the programme. There are, therefore, now a total of 57 students who are members of the MMD family and are enjoying support in their acquisition of interdisciplinary education and soft skills training.

The next round of admissions will be open in September 2023 and will be followed by an informational reminder for those interested in joining the programme.

Another innovation in the new semester is a dedicated logo for the MMD programme, which has been created in collaboration with the MU Rector's Office to identify the programme from the outset and link it to J. G. Mendel as the father of genetics. For the new logo, the portrait of J. G. Mendel was used, which not only students and employees could meet throughout last year during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of this famous Brno-born scientist. Now, this portrait is becoming synonymous with the MUNI Mendel Doctorandus programme. We hope you will like the new logo and that it will be used to promote the programme and as an explicit identifier of the students engaged in it. You can download the logo for your signature here.

If you, too, would like to be part of the MUNI Mendel Doctorandus programme, prepare your application for September 2023, when we will open the next round of the selection process.

An Interesting Event - The Night of Law

The Night of Law is an evening and night full of lectures, theater performances, film screenings and tours of courthouses and other public institutions. Everything will revolve around the law, but it certainly won't be just for lawyers. Quite the opposite - we organize the Law Night to bring the law closer to the people. The program of the festival is in the Czech language www.nocprava.cz. During the Night of Law, it is possible to visit the Supreme Court and talk to four of its judges during the tour and subsequent discussions. The Supreme Administrative Court has prepared a vibrant programme, which has several meetings with judges. The programme will also include very popular quizzes. But the Night of Law is not only about lectures and information but also about fun! That's why the Scala cinema will be screening films for free, followed by discussions: at the Faculty of Law, actor Filip Teller has prepared a dramatic reading of part of the book Off the Record. And the Faculty theatre Company has prepared a "1918: Conversations Before the Law" performance at the Husa na provázku theater.

Interesting Reading from the Faculty of Science / MU:

Hrachovina - the Hidden Message

"The unique aspect of the sculpture is its message to future generations in the form of DNA of several notable personalities who played a role in the creation of the statue and the promotion of Mendel’s legacy. "Lyophilized DNA and other biological material, such as hair, was placed in special test tubes enclosed in polystyrene and placed in metal balls representing green peas all over the sculpture. The uppermost sample, somewhere around the gilded part of the artwork, is that of the DNA of Gregor Johann Mendel himself," said Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Studies of Masaryk University Šárka Pospíšilová. The DNA samples were taken, processed and "packed" by scientists from Masaryk University’s CEITEC."
