Newsletter for PhD students and Postdocs

Dear PhD students and Postdocs,

Right now, you have in your hands the current issue of Newsletter in which we look back on the just concluded PhD Day 2022 and also MU Summer PhD School. The Newsletter is, as always, supplemented with current opportunities for further education. We will also look at last year's PhD studies survey results. We want to follow up on that survey again this year - but we'll need your help! Please share your opinion with us - fill in the questionnaire!

A Look Back at the PhD Day 2022

On September 14, 2022, the Bohunice Campus became the host of the inter-faculty PhD day.

The event was designed as an information session for new PhD students, providing them with the necessary information regarding doctoral studies, interdisciplinary training opportunities, student competitions, and presentations of popular mobility programmes. Master's students already considering PhD studies were also invited, and the PhD day gave them insight into this study's demands.

During the PhD day, all participating faculties (MUNI SCI, MUNI SPORT, MUNI MED, MUNI PHARM) and CEITEC Institute were represented by their representatives, sharing with the students the possibilities of supporting their PhD students in the form of mentoring, TAC (Thesis Advisory Committee) and social networking to building a scientific community.

One of the highlights of this year's PhD day was the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation in advancing PhD studies between the faculties in the Bohunice University Campus (MUNI SCI, MUNI SPORT, MUNI MED), the Faculty of Pharmacy and the CEITEC Institute. This connection has enabled closer cooperation and sharing in the field of interdisciplinary education of doctoral students. This prepared the ground for establishing the new MUNI Mendel Doctorandus study programme, whose ceremonial presentation was made by the Vice-dean for Doctoral Studies of the Faculty of Science, Luděk Bláha during the PhD day.

The new course MUNI Mendel Doctorandus (https://mmd.muni.cz/) provides an opportunity for interdisciplinary education, acquisition of soft skills and extended internships abroad. Last but not least, the successful graduate of this programme will also receive the European Doctorate, which is an additional benefit in the next steps of the career of our PhD students.

Summer School for doctoral students 2022

This August, the MU Research and Development Office organised the sixth Summer School for PhD students. The event was once again held at the University Centre in historic city of Telč, which is very favourable for this event and contributes to its great comfort.

The Summer School traditionally focuses on the development of pedagogical and communication skills of the participants. This year, for the first time, workshops and seminars in English were included in the programme so that foreign Masaryk university PhD students could also participate. The international setting and the presence of students from different disciplines contributed to very pleasant, creative and enriching environment in which we believe everyone felt comfortable.

This summer school which was very smartly organised, helped me to understand the fundamentals of these soft skills and practice them. It helped me know how to explain complicated things to people.

Our activities throughout school helped to gain confidence, do innovative work, develop leadership skills and, most notably, the right approach to teamwork.

Apart from this, meeting people from various disciplines and exchanging our knowledge and point of view was a lovely experience.“ (Isar, CEITEC)
