What are the general admission requirements?
Applicants to doctoral study programmes are expected to have a good background in the field as well as high level of English to be able to perform fully all duties required and connected to the doctoral study programme.
Applicants for doctoral studies need to prove they are holders of a university Master’s degree in a field corresponding to the doctoral study programme they choose to apply for.
The applicant is supposed to check the requirements for applicants specified for particular fields of study here.
What is the admission fee?
The admission fee is 600 CZK and is paid online upon submitting the electronic application form.
International applicants with master diplomas issued by foreign university need to pay also a fee of 750 CZK related to recognition of previous foreign education which is an essential part of the admission process. The recognition is done and valid only for the purpose of admission to doctoral studies at the Faculty of Science Masaryk University. Please see more information here.
When can you submit an application?
The applications for doctoral study programmes can be submitted in two periods during the academic year: 1. 1. – 30. 4. (for autumn semester) and 1. 8. – 30. 11. (for spring semester)
How to apply?
1/ Choose your field of study/specialization and contact your future supervisor
Find the field of study and specialization that best suits your interest here. You will find a list of supervisors and their emails at the bottom of the page of each programme description. Contact a supervisor with your doctoral study and research proposal.
2/ Submit an online application form and the required attachments

Please note you have to fill-in the name of your future supervisor at the Faculty of Science. You will also need him/her to write you a Letter of Recommendation. If you have not got your supervisor yet, please find the contacts in the study programmes descriptions.
Required attachments to be uploaded to the application:
• Curriculum vitae
• Essay / Motivation letter (up to two pages explaining your interest and research plan in the study field of your choice)
• Letter of Recommendation from a person familiar with your academic background
• Letter of Recommendation from your future supervisor at The Faculty of Science MU
• Photocopies of all diplomas and transcripts from your previous university studies. For doctoral studies a completed Master’s degree in the corresponding study field is required.
Recognition of the previous education is an essential condition for the admission process. An applicant is obliged to submit verified copies of diplomas and diploma supplements with translations into English and with relevant verification of signatures and stamps – please check more about the form of these documents and the recognition of previous education here
• English certificate- any certificate or proof of your sufficient level of English
3/ Pay the admission fee – follow the guidelines once you submit the application (The admission fee is 600 CZK)
What happens when the application is completed and submitted?
If the application and the required attachments are complete, it is passed on to the respective department which then organizes the entrance examination. Information about admission procedure and criteria of acceptance for every programme are available here. Your presentation during the entrance examination is evaluated by an admission committee that decides upon the number of received points.
When is the entrance examination and how is it performed?
If not limited by the terms specific to the particular study programme, the entrance examination can take place throughout the year. The student must do the entrance exam in the appropriate study programme preferably in person, if not possible, the interview might be done via Skype or email correspondence, in English.
What are the steps after successfully passing the interview?
An applicant is informed about successful passing of the interview by the committee or by the International Relations Office. At this moment the applicant needs to fulfill the part of admission process concerning the recognition of foreign education and pay the fee of 750 CZK for the the recognition of previous education.
International Relations Office then completes the admission process and prepares acceptation documents and has them signed by the Dean. The final decision lies on the Dean of faculty. Documents needed for a visa application (Confirmation of Acceptance and Confirmation of Accommodation) are then sent to applicant by post.
