Introduction

The application of sealing and sorbent clays requires at least the basic knowledge of five regions and many subregions of theoretical argilology:

   1. Mineral composition and principal properties of suitable clays, including their crystal structures.

   2. Clay-water system.

   3. The base of surface charge, ion exchange capacity and sorption selectivity of phyllosilicates.

   4. Specific surface area and related properties.

   5. Beneficiated and modified clays as sorbents or molecular sieves and catalysts.

The quotations of some papers in this extended abstract represent only a small fragment of more than 250 most useful citations listed in the monograph.
