Introduction

Since the end of the 70th many investigations were carried out on the formation of pillared clays. They are obtained by introduction of polymeric metal-oxo-hydroxo-cations into the interlayer space of smectites /1/. Much attention was paid to the evolution and modification of the micropore system and the acidity of the products. But only little efforts were made regarding the knowledge of the mechanism of the pillaring process and the behaviour of the pillaring agent.

Our investigation is an attempt to compare the formation of pillared clays by introduction of mixed polymeric oxo-hydroxo-aluminium-/zirconium-cations into the interlayer space of montmorillonites with different cation exchange capacity.
