Newsletter for employees

We wish everyone a wonderful Christmas full of peace and well deserved rest

A Christmas message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues,

Let me briefly recap the end of 2019 and give an outline of the outlook for next year. In 2019, we celebrated 100 years since the foundation of Masaryk University and our Faculty of Science, which was one of the four founding faculties of Masaryk University. We also managed to complete accreditation of all our Doctoral study programs, including the qualification procedures. At the same time, we also kept in mind the trend towards excellence in research. We have recently accredited two new professionally  oriented study programs: Biotechnology and Geo-environmental Risks and Remediation (graduates of these programs receive an engineering degree).

You must also have noticed that new events took place this year, not only for students but also for employees. I would like these events to become a tradition so that we can all meet on informal occasions.

Like last year, we were again very successful in grant competitions and we still hold the position of one of the most scientifically successful faculties in the Czech Republic. I am proud that the Faculty has been awarded the prestigious projects ‘Teaming’ and ‘ERA chair’, thus fulfilling our vision of successful acquisition of international projects. The HR Award has also been successfully launched in very important areas, such as career growth and employee appraisal.

And what awaits us in the New Year, 2020? As part of our strengthening internationalisation, we will be opening the first undergraduate program in English (Biochemistry). Meanwhile, HR Award implementation will continue. We will also focus on making changes to curricula regarding teacher combinations that are more focused on interfacing with practical work.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year within the warm circle of your families and friends. Gain new strength through Christmas fairy tales, candy and punch, so that we can start 2020 together in full force.

HR Award Implementation Phase – Second Half of 2019 In a Nutshell: We are Working on Sustaining the HR Award

We continue with the implementation of the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R, HR Award) at the Faculty of Science MU. Below please find the summary of our main achievements in the second half of 2019.

Baron Trenck: New Face of a Legend

Relax from the Christmas rush and take a walk to Špilberk Castle, where you can visit an exhibition that our own anthropologists helped create. Until 31 December 2019, it is possible to go and see the exhibition entitled ‘Baron Trenck: New Face of a Legend’, where you will see a unique digital reconstruction of the face and body of the renowned pandur commander František Trenck. The exhibition represents a unique project that brought together professionals across many disciplines for over three years in order to create a vivid picture of this historical personality.

Award from the Ministry of Education

Zdeněk Bochníček received an Award from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports for his educational activities at the university on 27 November 2019.

"100 Liters of Blood THANKS TO MUNI"

The Faculty of Science is supporting the project "100 litres of blood THANKS TO MUNI". Other potential donors wishing to give blood as part of the event may do so until the end of January 2020. For more info see here.

Science Night 2019 at the Faculty of Science

On Friday, September 27 2019, ‘Science Night’, an event for all science lovers and enthusiasts, was held all over the Czech Republic. This year, the theme of the event was "Environmentally friendly".

BBQ with the Deans

This is the second year that the ‘BBQ with the deans’ has taken place. This is an informal meeting of deans and students of the Medicine, Science and Sports Studies campuses, during which students have the opportunity to meet and talk with their deans.

PhD Day

The Opening of the Academic Year – Garden Party

At the Faculty of Science, the opening of the academic year 2019/2020 took place in the form of a garden party. The event, which took place on September 18, 2019, was open to all students and staff of the Faculty of Science. The program included the planting of commemorative linden trees to mark the 100th anniversary of the Faculty's foundation, the christening of a calendar and live music and refreshments. We look forward to next year’s event and believe that this pleasant, informal gathering will soon become a tradition.

There Are More Interviews on the Website

In the previous newsletter, we mentioned that that we will be publishing a series of interviews with prominent faculty personalities to mark 100 years since the foundation of the Faculty of Science. You can now find these in the Current news section of the new website. In a fascinating series of interviews, prof. Malina, prof. Relichová, prof. Brzobohatý and doc. Paleček describe life at the faculty in the past.

The New Year Will Be Full of Events Again, Including the Open Day and the Faculty of Science’s Representative Ball

The year 2019 is almost over and the new year is knocking on the door, bringing with it new conferences, workshops and events.

Among these, we would like to mention in particular the Faculty of Science Open Days, which will take place on January 25 and January 28 at both the Kotlářská and UKB campuses. A second event, which is both pleasant and interesting, is the traditional Representative Ball of the Faculty of Science, which will take place on February 2 at KC Semilasso.

All events will be gradually added to the calendar on our new website. If you would like to add an event, please email us at pr@sci.muni.cz.
