Newsletter for PhD students and Postdocs

Dear PhD students and Postdocs,

In the current Early-stage Researchers Newsletter, we welcome spring with an overview of possible recent lectures we will offer, take a closer look at the upcoming elections to the Academic Senate, and read about news related to what is happening at our faculty. We will also look ahead to the summer through the offer of the summer PhD school organised by RMU and its alternative run by the CJV Centre.
I hope you enjoy the spring months and that our Newsletter will support your eagerness for further learning and development.

Don't be Afraid to Become a Member of the Academic Senate - Student Chamber and be Part of the Change.

Do you have an interest in the running of our faculty and want to take an active part in the decision-making? In that case, now is a good time to apply and become a member of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science (AS PřF MUNI). You may contribute to managing the faculty with the dean, vice-deans, and bursar.

As this Newsletter addresses primarily to Early-stage Researchers, we call especially for students to participate and become part of the Student Chamber (Studentská Komora – SKAS PřF MUNI). Your task will be to vote for the sake of other students on important issues concerning the developments at the MU Faculty of Science; you will approve and comment on the most important issues (such as electing a future dean and approving budgets or scholarships). You will also have the opportunity to make suggestions, which will improve life at the faculty. And since SKAS has 12 students out of 27 senate members, the SKAS voice is very strong.

But how does the election proceeds? Once every three years, an election is open in the university's Information System (IS). Each candidate briefly presents their programme or ideas, and students across all Faculty of Science vote for their 12 representatives. The dates of the upcoming elections will be announced at the end of April. So keep an eye on the bulletin board in the IS or the e-mail box where you receive regular newsletters about current events, and you won't miss anything.

All students are strongly encouraged to take the challenge – Czechs, Slovaks, and Internationals! Will you be the one who will influence the future of the Faculty of Science?

Soft Skills Training for Early-stage Researchers

We want to inform you about new training opportunities in pedagogical competencies provided in English by the MU Competence Development Centre, CERPEK.                 This spring, CERPEK is offering a new Foundation of University Teaching Excellence course and an opportunity for university staff to develop their teaching skills through interim mentoring.

Join us for a semester-long professional development programme focused on improving the quality of teaching. Topics will include aims and methods of lessons and courses, assessment, and further professional development. This professional development programme is intended for all teachers at Masaryk University. The program is open to non-Czech/Slovak speakers and those Czech and Slovak speakers who would feel more comfortable completing such a program in English. Greetings from Human Design Group and CNES MEDES from a Student of the MMD Programme

Lucie Ráčková, a tireless stress hunter from the Faculty of Science and one of the members of the MUNI Mendel Doctorandus programme (MMD), who is testing a new method for stress reduction, shared with us the goal of her research. As part of her current internship in France, under the auspices of the Human Design Group and the Institut de Médecine et de Physiologie Spatiales at the Centre national d'études spatiales (MEDES CNES), she is investigating the effects of stress both in the context of routine office work and during space analogue missions. Commenting on her current research, Lucie says: "We are working with a prototype device that was originally used to reduce sleep inertia, a condition in which fatigue, reduced cognitive function, and attention of the subject persists for about one hour after waking up. We use unique technologies, such as a special light with a precisely adjustable wavelength. In this project, we are also extending the possibilities of using this method for stress reduction. This means that a person should be able to regenerate faster by using this "biohacking" - for example, by manipulating the lighting or other means that affect the subject's perception." Lucie Ráčková will participate in further educational activities related to space studies this summer in Brazil. Here, Lucie will be part of the prestigious Space Studies Program under the auspices of the International Space University. The programme is primarily aimed at young early-career scientists who would like to develop their future careers in the space sector.
We wish Lucie much success so that she can tame the stress!

35 million EUR from EU and Czech Republic to Etablishment of Research Centre Focused on the Development of Advanced Cell and Gene Therapies

Thanks to €35 million funding from the European Union and the Czech Republic, Central European Advanced Therapy and Immunotherapy Centre (CREATIC) will start its activities from 1 September 2023. CREATIC focuses on undiagnosed untreatable rare diseases, paediatric patients with high-risk tumours, and adult cancer patients suitable for Advanced Theraphy Medicinal Products (ATMP) treatment. The overall aim of CREATIC is to translate research and innovation (R&I) in cell and gene therapies into clinical practice for the benefit of patients. CREATIC is based on a multidisciplinal approach, which will enable the centre to navigate and be an leading actor in the paradigm shift from drug development for larger patient groups to individualized treatment strategies - an approach which falls outside the scope and interests of the traditional pharmaceutical industry.

CREATIC - the flagship institution in the Central Europe

Progress in biomedical science enables scientists to use a whole new toolbox to treat a significant group of diseases, such as inherited rare diseases or diverse rare cancers. About 30 million EU citizens are affected by one of over 6000 rare diseases currently recognised. Significant costs to public health stem in large part from the lack of transparency on R&D expenditures and access and reimbursement concerns in respective EU countries. Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), often called “living drugs”, apply recent advances in genomics, cell biology, and gene editing to deliver truly personalised curative options such as somatic-cell and gene therapies. Central European Advanced Therapy and Immunotherapy Centre (CREATIC) will be established at Masaryk University in Brno. Apart from Masaryk University, the centre also includes core partners from Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, Leipzig University and University of Copenhagen. Together, they will ensure that CREATIC becomes a role model and flagship institution in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region, providing excellent gene and somatic cell research to create personalised ATMP Fair Medicine for the treatment of life-threatening or chronically debilitating diseases that are currently considered incurable.

CREATIC – changing paradigms towards patients, society, and Fair Medicine

CREATIC will use the existing expertise at Masaryk University Advanced Cell Immunotherapy Unit (ACIU) in the research and innovation (R&I) of somatic cell therapies, formally established in 2010. By including the expertise of CZECRIN a national node of European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN-ERIC) and university hospitals, CREATIC will fulfil its vision of not only delivering ambitious research, but also of delivering research results that directly benefits patients. CREATIC will become the regional centre introducing the one-site medical services where clinical and scientific institutions work closely together to reduce costs and geographical distances in the triangle patient–hospital–R&D institution. By detailing the costs and processes associated with the development and treatment of ATMPs, regional and European policymakers will be able to benefit from CREATIC to make evidence based regulatory and reimbursement decisions. As a whole, CREATIC will be able to offer patients and society safer, individualized, unique, and financially sustainable treatments under the concept of Fair Medicine.
