An introductory word from the Dean

Dear colleagues,

Before we all head off for the holidays for some well-deserved rest and inspiration, let me offer of what lies ahead of us in the academic year ahead.

The current debate on the state of public finances, in which I am actively involved in various professional forums and platforms, does not bring much optimism. So, even during the holidays, I will continue to devote all my efforts to ensuring that the savings planned by the government do not affect the sciences, which are key to the critical infrastructure of the state. Unthinking budget cuts in science and research would reduce the ability to respond to major societal challenges, increase vulnerability to future threats and reduce the Czech Republic's overall prosperity and competitiveness.

Hemiparasitic plants help to maintain the lawns on the Bohunice University Campus

The lawns on the Bohunice University Campus are currently blooming in yellow and magenta colours. This is due to two hemiparasitic plants, Rhinanthus alectorolophus and Melampyrum arvense, which not only bloom beautifully but also reduce the growth of otherwise dominant grasses and other plants. Research by scientists from the Department of Botany and Zoology at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University has been focused on hemiparasitic plants and their application in nature conservation.

Brno Scientists Get Closer to the Future Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease

A team of 23 scientists from Brno has come significantly closer to answering the question of how to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common cause of dementia and leads to gradual dependence on the daily help of another person. Experts from the Faculties of Science and Medicine at Masaryk University, the International Clinical Research Center and the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute believe that the research results will help develop other highly effective therapeutic agents for this 21st century threat to civilisation.

“A key role in the development of Alzheimer’s dementia is played by apolipoprotein E (ApoE), also found in brain tissue. We have discovered the molecular basis of the undesirable accumulation of this apolipoprotein and, at the same time, shown a way to suppress this accumulation of ApoE with a potential drug that is already in advanced clinical testing with expected approval in 2025” as a molecular biologist Martin Marek summarised the primary significance of the research. Martin Marek works in the Loschmidt laboratories of the RECETOX Centre at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University and at the International Clinical Research Centre (ICRC), which is a joint workplace of St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno and the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University.

Don't miss any important news! Set up automatic notifications for unread messages

Some departments regularly communicate with employees by sending a mass email or web news. These emails are sent irregularly and, in some cases, to a select group of employees. But what if you're not in that group, or if the information is not relevant to you? During the holiday season, it can easily happen that an important message is "stuck" among the newer ones.
