The magazine aims to show how Czech female scientists are engaged in cutting-edge research, and, through short autobiographies, present them as inspiring personalities. They also want to draw attention to one of the biggest issues current in science, i.e. the differences between men and women in the field, particularly the differences in their financial situation and how this affects the lives of women with children.

Professor Jana Klánová, Director of the RECETOX centre, specialises in environmental chemistry. She studied mathematics and chemistry at the MU Faculty of Science and received her Doctorate in the field of Environmental Chemistry. Jana has worked as a researcher in both the public and private sector, with jobs in the material, molecular-biological and environmental sciences. Since 2001, she has been working at the RECETOX centre, and has led the organisation since 2013. This year, she received an honorary Doctorate from Örebro University in Sweden.

Jana’s present research is focused on the study of relationships between the environment and health, especially the influence of chemical substances on the development of chronic diseases. She has been involved in a number of international projects, participates in building monitoring capacities in Africa and Latin America, and strives for the improved availability and usability of research data.

Professor Julie Dobrovolná is a trained doctor and has been acted as head of the Environmental Physiology department at the RECETOX centre since 2015. Julie has dedicated herself to researching human stress and has developed her own method for measuring stress, whether delayed or in real time, using blood samples. Among others, Julie collaborates with researchers at ETH Zürich and the prestigious Mayo Clinic in North America, and, with the help of her research partners, she has developed a method for measuring stress in astronauts. In 2020, she was appointed Professor of Pathological Physiology, she was chosen as one of the winners of the European campaign #EUwomen4future, and the Czech magazines Hospodářské noviny and CzechCrunch included her on their 2020 list of Innovators.

Šárka Mikmeková, a graduate of the Physics of Condensed Substances Department at the MU Faculty of Science, was also among the selected scientists. She is currently employed at the Institute of Instrumentation of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where she mainly deals with the classification of advanced steel structure using artificial intelligence.

To compile the selection, Forbes magazine approached leading Czech scientific institutions, universities and professional foundations to obtain a list of top experts in various fields of science and research. In addition to these recommendations, the number of prestigious grants and awards obtained, citation responses, appearances in the media, public education activities and leadership within their scientific group were all essential for the final selection. In this case, the Forbes editors focused on selecting interesting, inspiring and active female scientists across a range of disciplines.
