Botanical seminar: Clonal or sexual – the evolutionary dance of blackberries

In flowering plants, successful seed development depends on a precisely balanced ratio of maternal and paternal genomes in the endosperm (2m:1p). Apomictic plants often disrupt this balance, which can reduce seed fitness. Our study shows that apomictic blackberries can overcome this limitation and produce larger seeds with potentially higher fitness than their sexual counterparts.
