The genus Fritillaria includes species with the largest reported genome size for any plant. This project aims to provide molecular and cytogenetic study of the DNA sequences contributing to the genome obesity and its variation within the genus. We aim to address the following questions: (1) How does genome size vary within Fritillaria in a phylogenetic framework? (2)Are these giant genomes composed of a high number of different repeat families, or a few repeat types amplified to extremely high copy numbers? (3) What contribution do the different classes of repetitive DNA make to genome size variation and the striking differences in heterochromatin amounts between Fritillaria species? (4) What is the chromosomal distribution of the major families of repetitive elements and how is genome obesity linked with karyotype stability? (5) How is the phylogenetic relationship between different repeat families reflected in phylogenies/patterns based on nuclear/plastid genes, heterochromatin amount and genome size, geographic origin and taxonomic treatment?
