Carbon monoxide, despite its toxicity, is a signaling molecule with anti-inflammatory and cell-protective properties, with possible clinical applications. Because a controlled releasing mechanism at the cellular level is needed, light-activated CO-delivering molecules can provide a high spatial and temporal precision, allowing the drug to be delivered only into the targeted tissues. One of these molecules, with low toxicity and near-IR absorption, will be designed and studied within this project
