  • September 1st 1976 May 31th 1984: senior assistant at the same Institute. Education and research, projects like Interkosmos program, grant agencies of Czech Republic, etc.
  • June 1st 1984 till now: Associate Professor (dozent) of cartography and geoinformatics at the same Institute. My work concentrates for teaching of the BSc., MSc. and PGS students (doktorands), supervising of the geographical projects, diploma thesis and doctor thesis. I am also member of the committees for PhD. and associate professors examining commissions, chairman or member of the scientific and pedagogical committee in geoinformatics, remote sensing and cartography in my own university and several others in Czech republic (incl. Charles University). Very important part of my activities is research and organizing teamworks in sustainable development, GIS, RS and digital cartography, especially in the programs of EU (5FP, Leonardo da Vinci, Inco-Copernicus), between Czech Republic and developing countries (e.g. P.R. China ), Grant Agency of the Czech republic and local/district governments (land reform process supported by remote sensing, GIS and digital cartography technologies). Occassionaly I am invited as an expert for evaluation of the projects 4th (in the past) and 5th Framework programmes and preparation of the new topics for 6th FP of the EU. I am expert in the EU project INSPIRE and also reviewing scientific papers from abroad and Czech Republic. I participated as the expert in the activities of FAO, "DGs" Information Society and DG Environment of European Commission in Brussels, Ministry of Informatics and Ministry of Environment of Czech Republic. I am representative of Masaryk university in state-wide activities, such as NEMOFORUM and Director of the focal GISIG point in Czech Republic. (More information is in my CV). Recently I am a member of the editorial board for Atlas of Landscape of Czech Republic.
  • September 1st 1992 till now: Director of the Laboratory on Geoinformatics and Cartography, Institute of Geography, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. Management, preparation, and realization of international and domestic research projects in spatial data infratructure, GIS, cartographic visualisation, mobile technologies, sustainable development, crises management, open electronic atlases and development of Information/Knowledge-based societies. Preparation of global and regional international conferences and symposia.
Pedagogical Activities
  • My teaching activities at Masaryk University are in the fields of GIS and cartography. I am author or co-author of number of University lecture notes, including the first textbook in the field of GIS in the former Czechoslovakia. I am a chairman of the scientific and pedagogical committee for cartography, geoinformatics and remote sensing at Masaryk university in Brno and member of the similar committees at the Charles University in Prague, Technical University in Brno and Prague. I am also a member of the scientific board of the Geographic Institute of the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing, P.R. of China and research-scientific institute in Hyderabad, India. I have had students from India, China, Angola, Senegal and Vietnam. I have been supervisor of 14 doctoral students. Their dissertations included the application of GIS, remote sensing and digital cartography in the fields of GI policy, sustainable development, spatial information infrastructure, agricultural, forestry, environment, regional and landscape planning.
Scientific and Research Activities
