A Night with Andersen at the Central Library FoS

On the first Friday in April, the Central Library of the Faculty of Science hosted A Night with Andersen, a worldwide library event to promote children's reading. This year was its 22nd year, but the library joined the event for the first time after it had been cancelled twice in the previous years.

The date of the event is annually set in late March and early April, which marks International Children's Book Day (2 April), which is also the birthday of Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, after whom the event is named. However, the event's programme is far from being limited to Andersen. Czech libraries had the opportunity to use, among other things, the theme of birds, as this year's Night with Andersen took place on International Bird Day (1 April).

In cooperation with experts in ornithology, geology and astrophysics, the Central Library prepared an entertaining and educational afternoon programme for children and grandchildren of the Faculty of Science staff. In addition to interactive lectures, the children had the opportunity to search for treasure, play board games, read engaging books or create in a creative workshop.

Despite the bad weather, the event was a success, perhaps also thanks to the cooperation with painter Jiří Fixl, who provided original thematic illustrations for the Central Library. It can be expected that the Central Library will join the Night with Andersen in the following years, too.
