Eduard Schmidt receives the Medal of Lifelong Merit for the Development of Natural Sciences

Eduard Schmidt, Rector Emeritus of Masaryk University (MU), has received the Honorary Medal for Lifetime Achievement in the Development of Natural Sciences. The medal was awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Tomáš Kašparovský, at the Scientific Board meeting on September 29, 2021.

  • Schmidt began his professional career at the Department of Experimental Physics in the Faculty of Science, University of Brno, then named Jan Evangelista Purkyně.
  • While there, he was involved in the optical properties of solids, semiconductor physics and thin film physics, both as a researcher and a teacher.
  • He has published the results of his research in many professional journals.
  • From 1990 to 1992, he was Dean of the MU Faculty of Science, from 1992 to 1998 he held the position of Rector of MU and from 1998 to 2004 he was Vice-Rector for Research and Development at the University of Brno.
  • He is the founder of the University Campus in Bohunice
  • He has served as a member of the Scientific Councils of several institutions, and was a member of the Council of the Government of the Czech Republic for Science and Research.
  • Through his excellence as a scientist, educator and rector, he has influenced many generations of young people in and outside the field of science. As a citizen and an extremely active member of many cultural and social organisations and commissions, he has contributed to the development of culture and its background in Brno.
