Peatlands are among the most endangered habitats in the whole country

Peat bogs, i.e. swamp ecosystems that are home to water-loving plants, are among the most endangered habitats in the Czech Republic. Biologists from Masaryk University in Brno found this out during preparation of the Red List of Endangered Habitats in the Czech Republic.

Ticks are full of disease. They also carry toxoplasma

While it is generally known that ticks carry tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease, these are far from the only diseases that ticks can cause in humans. In Brno and its surroundings, scientists have identified six different pathogens in ticks, including anaplasma, babesia and toxoplasma.

An article on the topic of machine learning for protein engineering, prepared for the journal ACS Catalysis of the American Chemical Association by Dr. Stanislav Mazurenko from our Loschmidt laboratories, was selected as amongst the 25 most influential articles in the 10 years journal history.

MF DNES: The recent floods were the worst in Europe for 500 years

European scientists, including experts from the MU Faculty of Science, have mapped the occurrence of floods over the past five centuries. The extensive historical survey of European floods has now been published in the journal Nature. Read more in today's MF DNES (only in Czech).
