Biological research at the Faculty of Science covers both ecological and evolutionary fields, as well as experimental laboratory-based research of living organisms. Research within the Department of Botany and Zoology focusses on the ecology, evolution and systematics of vascular plants and their communities, insects, spiders, molluscs, fish parasites and vertebrate species such as bats, including research into underlying processes such as the role of the genome and its size. At the Department of Experimental Biology, research covers integrative fields of molecular and cell biology and genetics, protein engineering and its applications, experimental microbiology, physiology, immunology, developmental biology of animals and plant stress physiology.
