Current phytosociological system has been largely built intuitively on the basis of small, often regionally constrained datasets. Modern computer technology and software for management of large databases and numerical analysis presents a challenge to def ine clear and formalized classification criteria. The project focuses on methodological aspects of the parameterization and its demonstration on the important vegetation types of the Czech Republic, notably the meadows and broad-leaved forests. The param eterization means (1) clear and formalized delimitation of vegetation units using floristic criteria, (2) definition of the ecological range of the vegetation types using hard data, (3) definition of the geographical range of the vegetation types. The pa rameterization will be based on large phytosociological databases with several thousands of relevés, new numerical methods for delimitation of vegetation units in these databases and GIS modelling. Special attention will be paid to the effect of scale on
