Species discrimination of diplozoids, based on morphology of the attachment apparatus, is difficult and demands a great deal of experience as these parts are highly variable. Species markers based on the ribosomal rRNA gene array will be designed for diplozoids belonging to various species complexes and the validity of recent morphological and characters for species identification will be evaluated. Also new methods of molecular karyology including data on macro and micromorphology of chromosomes will be used for evaluation of inter and intraspecific structure of selected taxa. Parasite specimens of Paradiplozoon homoion from different European, Mediterranean and Far East populations will be collected and differences in the intergenic spacer rRNA genes (IGS) will be analysed. Also populations of P. homoion from different host fish will screened for differences in the IGS to reveal possible host related selection pressures leading to speciation.
