From Labs to Life: PhD Journeys Unplugged
From coffee breaks to career tips, students explored the twists and turns of the PhD journey with those who’ve walked the path before them.
The traditional Garden Party at Kotlářská, with which the Masaryk University (MU) Faculty of Science officially starts the new academic year, took place on Monday, September 18, 2023, on the faculty’s premises at Kotlářská. There, 350 visitors from the ranks of students, employees and invited guests took advantage of the opportunity to meet in a pleasant informal atmosphere. The program this year also included presentations of the new Masaryk University Faculty of Science Award.
The opening of the Garden Party was overseen by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Tomáš Kašparovský, along with the Rector of Masaryk University, Martin Bareš. Together, they then undertook the subsequent presentation of the new Masaryk University Faculty of Science Awards. The awardees, who were all chosen based on nominations from the individual departments of the Faculty of Science, included outstanding teachers of natural sciences and mathematics, faculty alumni and schools and institutions with which the faculty has cooperated long-term. In all, the awards for 2023 were presented to 13 personalities in the various categories.

The Czech national team achieved an extraordinary triumph at the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2025), a prestigious competition for high school students from around the world. The event, held in Jining, China, from August 7 to 17, 2025, tested both theoretical knowledge and practical skills across disciplines such as geology, hydrology, climatology, astronomy, and environmental science. In addition, the competition evaluated research capabilities and teamwork.
