Experimental and Molecular Biology

Bachelor's degree in full-time form. The language of instruction is Czech.

The programme can be studied only as a single subject with a specialization (Cell Biology, Experimental Animal Biology and Immunology, Experimental Plant Biology, Human Biology, Microbiology or Molecular Biology and Genetics).

What will you learn?

The study of this programme is aimed at an acquirement of knowledge and skills necessary for laboratory practice in various fields of modern experimental biology and/or for the further education in the selected specialization. Alumni of this Bachelor's degree programme obtain both the basics in main disciplines of the modern experimental biology (cell and molecular biology, genetics, anatomy and histology, physiology, microbiology, anthropology) and more detailed knowledge in the selected study specialization (Experimental Plant Biology, Experimental Animal Biology and Immunology, MIcrobiology, Human Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics). Other relevant biology disciplines (plant and animal phylogeny and diversity, evolutionary biology) and the main chemistry disciplines (anorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry) including laboratory practicals represent also an integral part of this education.

Career opportunities

Although the continuation in Master's degree programmes with direct access is expected for the majority of students, the alumni come in useful especially in the fields of biomedicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture and food industry, both in the research and practical applications. Their qualification allows them to participate in research projects as well as in laboratory practice, especially in the field of introduction, innovations and routine use of molecular biology and other experimental approaches and methods.

Admission requirements

Data from the previous admission procedure (1 Nov 2023 – 29 Feb 2024)

The part of admission test is written test, which inclides: Learning Potential Test (every Learning Potential Test on any faculty of MU), special test of biology with basics of chemistry. The level of special test corresponds with curriculum of grammar schools. Illustrations of special tests are available on http://www.sci.muni.cz (Czech only)

Criteria for evaluation

The hole classification includes the results of Learning Potential Test and special test of biology with basics of chemistry.

Recommended literature

Succes in Learning Potential Test is not based on study of literature. For succesful passing of the test is enough to have knowledges of grammar school curriculum of the subject.

Study options

Single-subject studies with specialization

In the single-subject studies, the student deepens knowledge in the concrete focus of the degree programme and chooses one specialization. The specialization is stated in the university diploma.

Follow-up studies

After completion of the Bachelor's studies, it is possible to continue further studies in any Master's degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements). The Faculty of Science of the Masaryk University offers these study programmes with direct access:

Experimental Plant Biology

Experimental Animal Biology and Immunology

MIcrobiology

Human Biology

Molecular Biology and Genetics
