Climate change in the Pannonian region of the Czech Republic and Austria is bringing higher temperatures, droughts, and frequent heatwaves. Lawns in both urban and rural landscapes are losing vitality and failing to fulfil their ecological functions. Their current form and maintenance have become unsustainable. The PannFlora project therefore introduces new approaches to establishing and managing lawns that will increase their resilience to extremes, support biodiversity, and reduce maintenance costs.
The main objectives of the project are:
- development and testing of regional seed mixtures from native species adapted to climatic extremes,
- verification of ecological methods for establishing and managing lawns in settlements and in the countryside,
- implementation of 8 ha of pilot sites in 15 locations,
- transfer of results into practice through training events, publications, and a certified methodology.
The outputs will include technology for producing regional seed of species not yet available on the market, proven management practices, and practical tools for establishing sustainable lawns in both urban and rural settings.
The project is implemented within the Interreg Austria–Czech Republic programme and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in the amount of €1,020,238.42.
