Doctoral Study Income

Starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, full-time doctoral students are guaranteed a doctoral study income equivalent to 1.2 times the minimum wage, in accordance with the Amendment to the Higher Education Act. This income consists of a combination of the doctoral scholarship and/or salary for creative research activities related to the dissertation. 

Under the new regulations, the doctoral scholarship is usually paid retroactively, similar to a salary.

  • The doctoral study income ensures that doctoral students receive a guaranteed minimum income during their studies and creative research activities. 
  • The minimum amount of doctoral study income is 1.2 times the minimum wage. For the academic year 2026/2027, the amount is CZK 26,880 per month. 
  • Doctoral study income includes the agreed salary from an employment relationship for creative research activities at Masaryk University. It also includes salary received from external employers, provided that it is for creative research activities, and the faculty has a cooperation agreement with the external employer. In the application for the doctoral scholarship, the student declares all income received from employment relationships that is included in the doctoral study income and is responsible for the truthfulness and completeness of the information provided. The student must promptly report any changes that may affect the amount of the doctoral scholarship. Agreements to complete a job (DPP – Dohoda o provedení práce), agreements to perform work (DPČ – Dohoda o pracovní činnosti), rewards, compensations, and other types of scholarships are not included in doctoral study income. 
  • Both new and current students enrolled in full-time (prezenční) doctoral study within the standard period of study (i.e., up to and including the 8th semester) who meet the conditions are entitled to the doctoral scholarship. 
  • The minimum amount of the doctoral scholarship for the academic year 2026/2027 is CZK 12,000 per month. The doctoral scholarship is calculated as a supplement up to the guaranteed amount of doctoral study income, after deducting 2/3 of the gross declared salary. In no case does the scholarship fall below CZK 12,000. The scholarship is paid retroactively, in the same way as salary (for example, the scholarship for September is paid in October). 
  • Submitting an application is not mandatory, but it is the student’s right and a necessary condition for the doctoral scholarship to be awarded. A student may request the doctoral scholarship retroactively for up to one month, provided that the conditions were met. The doctoral scholarship is granted for one academic year; a new application must be submitted for each subsequent academic year.

I receive a doctoral scholarship (under the amendment to the Higher Education Act effective from September 2025)

Do not forget to:

  • Apply for a Scholarship (typically, at the beginning of the new academic year)
  • Check Document Office in IS MU regularly
  • Read your scholarship decisions
  • Waive your right to appeal, if applicable, to speed up the process of the decision becoming final
  • REPORT ANY CHANGES TO YOUR EXTERNAL EMLOYMENT by submitting the form and notifying the IS MU Document Office

I Receive a Doctoral Study Support Scholarship (before the Higher Education Act amendment)

Students who enrolled by the end of June 2024 generally have a decision on the award of a doctoral study support scholarship for the standard period of study. This does not apply in cases of interrupted studies. 

These decisions remain valid until the end of the 8th semester (inclusive) and guarantee a monthly income of CZK 16,000, excluding income from external employment outside Masaryk University. They are governed by the Transitional Provision (Article 13, Paragraph 4) of the MU Scholarship and Bursary Regulations and remain valid unless the student requests a change. 

The existing decisions remain in effect for the full period of 4 x 12 months unless the student requests a change. 

Doctoral students may choose to switch to the new Doctoral Study Income scheme. To do so, the student must request the cancellation of the previously issued decision and simultaneously apply for the doctoral scholarship. Both requests can be submitted together. 

Once the doctoral scholarship has been paid under the amended Higher Education Act, it will no longer be possible to return to the previous payment arrangement. 

The new doctoral scholarship can then be granted to students who meet the relevant conditions.
