Admission procedure

Single-subject study
Study in which a student has a pre-defined list of compulsory courses, which he/she complements from the offer of the given selective and elective courses. 
Compared to studies with specialisation, these programmes usually differ in that the student enjoys greater freedom in the choice of selective and elective courses. 

Single-subject study with specialisation 
The study consists of common courses for the given degree programme and specialised courses. The specialisation should increase knowledge in a specific part of the graduate’s profile. The degree programme may offer several specialisations; a student always enrols in one of them. 

Joint (double-subject) studies 
Joint studies are a combination of the main field of study and the secondary field of study, which forms part of a different degree programme. For the time being, it is not possible to freely combine the main and secondary fields.  

With the exception of pedagogical studies, this joint study is asymmetric at Masaryk University, i.e. significantly differs in the volume of studies in the main and secondary study plans. 

Daily study 
Daily mode of study means that the student’s duties are scheduled for individual working days according to a predetermined schedule.  

Combined mode of study 
A combined mode of study is often chosen by those applicants who also have some other duties (such as employment or family) which prevent them from attending lectures on a daily basis. Teaching takes place in blocks, usually on Fridays, mostly on the basis of a fixed schedule drawn up by the relevant faculty workplace.

All applicants must pass the entrance examination unless it has been waived for them.

The entrance exam for the Faculty of Science of Masaryk university programs is written or oral, or a combination of written and oral; as regards its contents and scope, it corresponds to the final State examination in the relevant Bachelor’s field of study. In the case of joint pedagogical studies, the entrance examination for a programme attended at the other faculty is governed by the conditions specified by that faculty.

Entrance examination for direct follow-up programmes

One-field studies and joint studies with both fields taught at the Faculty of Science

For applicants who study at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Bachelor’s study fields with a direct follow-up (see Waiver of the Entrance Examination), the entrance examination or its relevant part is replaced by the written part of the State final examination held in the spring semester of the academic year of 2023/2024.

Joint inter-faculty studies

The following conditions apply to applicants for joint inter-faculty degree programmes:

• Faculty of Science - For applicants who study at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Bachelor’s study fields with a direct follow-up (see Waiver of the Entrance Examination), the entrance examination or its relevant part is replaced by the written part of the State final examination held in the spring semester of the academic year of 2023/2024 for a field studied at the Faculty of Science.
  
• Faculty of Sports Studies, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Informatics – The entrance examination for a programme studied at one of the faculties is governed by the conditions of this faculty. At the faculties specified above, the State final examination does not replace the entrance examination.
• Faculty of Economics and Administration – The applicant only proves his/her knowledge in entrance examination in mathematics.
  
  For students of multi-field programmes who passed the final State examination in two consecutive semesters within the meaning of Article 24 of the Study and Examination Rules, the written part of the final State examination taken in the autumn semester of the academic year 2023/2024 shall also replace the entrance examination for a field taught at the Faculty of Science.

The entrance examination may be waived for applicants who study at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in the academic year of 2023/2024 subject to the following conditions:

• they study a Bachelor’s degree programme with a direct follow-up (see the table below);
• they achieve a grade-point average of up to 2.00 as of 12 April 2024 in courses set out in the template for the given field
• they pass the final State examination, or its last part, on the standard date in the spring semester of the academic year of 2023/2024.

Grades including recognised grades for which the numerical weight of the grade is determined are included in the average. Grades achieved in all attempts are included. If these conditions are met, the applicants need not apply for waiver of the entrance examination and need not indicate this fact in the e-application. This will be evaluated automatically based on the application for study they file.

Other applicants may apply for waiver of the entrance examination subject to the following conditions.

• they study a Bachelor’s degree programme without a direct follow-up at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University;
• they study a field thematically close to the degree programme for which they apply for a waiver of the entrance examination;
• they present the name and abstract of the Bachelor’s thesis;
• they achieve a grade-point average of up to 2.0 as of 12 April 2024 in courses related to the programme for which they apply. At the same time, they present a transcript of completed courses and respective grades.

Insert the completed application form for the entrance examination waiver, including the required documents, into the e-application no later than April 30, 2024.

Applicants will be informed of a waiver of the entrance examination in electronic form by 21 May 2024. If the entrance examination for a programme which includes multiple specialisations is waived, the applicant will be assigned to the specialisation with the highest priority. The Dean of the Faculty may grant the application depending on the programme’s capacity. There is no legal entitlement to waiver of the entrance examination.​

Foreign applicants (outside Slovakia) applying for the study of bachelor's or master's degree programs in the Czech language who have been exempted from the entrance examination are required to prove their knowledge of Czech by an examination in the Czech language at level B1 according to ALTE.

Enter the language level confirmation in the e-application no later than the date of enrollment in the study.

The number of admitted applicants is limited by the capacities of the individual degree programmes. As a rule, applicants whose entrance examination has not been waived will be admitted based on the order of their final score achieved during the examination. The score required for passing the entrance examination is not identical with the score required for passing the State Bachelor’s examination. Specialisation preference may be taken into account when evaluating the entrance examination.

The maximum possible score that can be achieved in the entrance examination is 1000 points. The weights for the individual parts of the examination are as follows:

Students with various types of handicaps are assisted in the preparation by the Support Centre for Students with Special Needs – Teiresiás.

The centre can offer help to people with a sensory or motor impairment, chronic illness, psychological problems and specific learning disorders. These people receive support ranging from the organisation’s own dispatching centre for personal assistance, to a number of aids, and to counselling and the centre’s own university-wide office for studies.

An applicant for study at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University may file an appeal against a decision on admission/non-admission for study. The appeal has to be lodged with the Dean of the Faculty within 30 days of delivery of the decision and sent to the following address: Office for Studies of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University, Kotlářská 2, 611 37 Brno.

The number of successful applicants may be increased after enrolment if it is found that the capacity limit for the field has not been reached. In that case, admission to study will be offered to other applicants exactly according to the order of scores they attained in the entrance examination, regardless of whether or not the applicant has filed an appeal against the Dean’s decision.

Additional admission will be recorded in the applicant’s e-application in the week after enrolment in the 1^st year. The decision on admission will be published in the e-application.

Scholarships are granted at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in accordance with the Scholarship Rules of Masaryk University, both within scholarship programmes of the Faculty and outside of them. All scholarships programmes of the Faculty are announced annually.
